I've come to your blog many moons after its inception, but here I am and this post speaks now to me in two ways.

One, it's a "who," not a "what." When I read, when I pray, for myself or with my daughters, I'm interacting with the person (underline) who made and will carry me to the end.

Two, I wish I would have had a wise one like your childhood pastor who could have spoken to me to not chuck everything from before my faith fully formed, but take with me everything that is good in the widest sense possible, not narrowly like those who defined good for me in my early walk.

To live under His loving gaze (and look up knowing it's really Him) and to live for Him in the wider world--that is now my aim.

Thanks for sharing parts of your story with everyone.

When you stated that Jesus appeared to Nathaniel "from out of nowhere," I am reminded of the following quote from Brennan Manning:

"Now/here spells nowhere. To be fully present to whoever or whatever is immediately before us is to pitch a tent in the wilderness of Nowhere. It is an act of radical trust--trust that God can be encountered at no other time and in no other place than the present moment. Being fully present in the now is perhaps the premier skill of the spiritual life. . . . Lost in Nowhere, we are found in the infinity of the eternal Now."

Thank God He pursues us "from out of nowhere" as we live in "the wilderness of Nowhere."

I keep coming back to your image of the tiny fist as a symbol of the incarnation--"weakness with a grip." And then I think of the Lord's words to Paul, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness," and the whole thing--Him for us, us in Him--sings more deeply in my soul. Thanks, my friend.

Insightful perspective and beautifully crafted Reggie - your last line reminds me of this quote:
"His name is Emmanuel— the God who is with us—who is made out of the same stuff we are and who is made out of the same stuff God is and who will not let either of us go.

" (Barbara Brown Taylor, Home By Another Way)
